Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities - Department of Classics, HU Berlin

Welcome to the Institute for Classical Philology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin!

Greek and Latin Language and Literature, Pedagogy of Teaching Classics and History of Science: these are the subject areas that make up Classical Philology at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. We are specialists in our fields and at the same time interested in the big picture by working together to research and teach the literature and knowledge of antiquity and the history of its transformation(s). Welcome! We invite you to browse through our homepage and find out more.

If you have any questions to which you cannot find answers here, please feel free to send us an e-mail: klassphil@hu-berlin.de.

Or drop by - we look forward to seeing you! Situated in the main building of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, itself a “built history of knowledge”, our institute is well worth a visit (not least for its enviable view onto the Forum Fridericianum and the boulevard Unter den Linden!). Our comfortable facilities with dedicated teaching rooms and excellent technological equipment, the Calder Library’s collections relating to the history of science (housed in the Institute) as well as the unique range of educational materials available on-site for the teaching of classical languages and our proximity to Berlin’s Museum Island, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the State Library and the Grimm Centre as well as the Humboldt Forum, the State Opera and several theatres invite you to learn and conduct research in a very special environment.
