Guidelines for awarding the Eduard Norden Prize to students at the Institute of Classical Philology
On 22 June 2017, the Institute Council of the Department of Classics adopted the following guidelines, based on the statutes for the awarding of prizes at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin dated 3 May 1993 (AMB No. 26/1993).
1. The Institute Prize
(1) The Institute for Classical Philology at Humboldt-Universität awards an annual prize for outstanding theses in the entire field of Classical Philology.
(2) The prize is awarded in two categories:
- Bachelor’s thesis
- Master’s thesis
(3) In special cases, exceptional student achievements realised in a context other than that of the final theses listed under (2) may be honoured.
2. Awarding of Prizes
(1) The Institute Council shall decide on the awarding of the prize in a private, closed-session meeting.
(2) The Institute Council shall make its decisions on the basis of the thesis advisors’ assessments, further written statements, and its own assessments. It shall also determine the award amount of the respective prizes within the scope of available funds.
(3) The decisions of the Institute Council do not represent any legal claim.
(4) The Institute Prize is usually awarded annually at the beginning of the winter semester. The call for applications is made public at the Institute; the application deadline is usually 15 September. If insufficient funds are available or an insufficient number of high-quality proposals have been received, the Institute Council may decide to withhold from award awarding prizes in whole or in part in the respective year.
(5) The prizes are endowed with a sum of award money in the amount specified under (2).
(6) The prizes are only awarded to persons who have produced the work intended to be honoured by such a prize in their capacity as members of the Institute of Classics at Humboldt-Universität.
(7) The work to be honoured must have been completed in the academic year preceding the award. The Institute Council decides on exceptions to this time limit.
Endowment
(1) Funding for the prizes derives from the general budgetary funds available to the Institute of Classics or other funds. If third-party funds are utilised for this purpose, the donor(s) and the amount of the allocation(s) must be made public to the university.
(2) The respective endowment of each awarded prize shall be determined by the Institute Council.
4. Selection of the awardees
(1) The awardees are selected on the basis of proposals from the Institute of Classics. All university professors, lecturers, and all academic staff at the Institute of Classics are eligible to nominate candidates. Self-nomination is also possible.
(2) The documents on which the selection is based include:
- the nominated thesis or work (preferably also in electronic form)
- the advisor assessments of the work (a corresponding declaration of consent from the nominee must be included in the submission)
- further expert opinions obtained by the Institute Council.
5. Name of the Prize
The Institute Council reserves the right to name the award after a personality associated with Classical Philology at Humboldt-Universität or its predecessor institutions. In accordance with the decision of the Institute Council from 24 September 2019, the award shall henceforth be called the “Eduard Norden Prize”.
