The Role of Intentio in Augustine’s Account of Time

My project explores the development of Augustine's psychological account of time, with a specific focus on the key concept of 'intentio’: a notion denoting the attention, will, or care of the soul directed toward an object. Through the analysis of the evolution of the concept of 'intentio' in three works - De immortalitate animae, De musica and Confessiones XI - my research aims to provide new insights into the development over time of Augustine's epistemological and moral understanding of time and temporality.
This dissertation is funded by a doctoral scholarship from the Einstein Centre Chronoi.

My project wants to offer a fresh perspective over the historical meaning of the innovations brought
about by Herophilus of Chalcedon and Erasistratus of Ceos with a focus on one single process:
respiration. Never having been problematized the diversity emerging from their two accounts of
respiration, I believe it particularly fruitful to regard Herophilus’ and Erasistratus’ explanations of it as
paradigmatic of their epistemology, possibly shedding some light on the extent of the so‐called
“anatomical revolution”.

Conflict and Crisis: The Role of Religious Practices in Greek Historiography

The aim of the dissertation project is to investigate the role of hikesie (ritual supplication for protection) in Greek historiography of the classical period. A special focus lies on the functionalisation of the ritual by actors in conflict and crisis situations as well as its literary representation by authors. The project is funded by a grant from the Berliner Antike-Kolleg.

Orphism and Metamorphosis of Symbolon: From the Physical to the Metaphysical

In meinem Projekt möchte ich die Bedeutungsverschiebung des Begriffs symbolon in altgriechischen Texten untersuchen, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf die orphische Bewegung, ihre Bedeutung innerhalb der griechischen Welt und die Verwendung des Begriffs. Ziel ist es, den Ursprung des Begriffs zu rekonstruieren, um zu verstehen, wie und warum er im Laufe der Zeit eine metaphysische/esoterische Bedeutung angenommen hat, insbesondere in einigen spezifischen griechischen Erfahrungen, mit möglichen späteren Parallelen in anderen Gruppen oder Kreisen von Eingeweihten.

Void in Aristotle’s Physics and the Greek Philosophical Tradition

The purpose of my project is to write a thorough and exhaustive monograph on Aristotle’s treatment of void. I intend to examine in depth his rebuttal of void in Physics IV 6–9 and analyze why his theory was not considered successful by later commentators. Furthermore, as Aristotle systematizes his predecessors’ views in his scrutiny of void, I shall investigate the theories of void proposed by other ancient philosophers, particularly the Atomists and Pythagoreans.

Scaffolding strategies in language-based Latin instruction during the textbook phase

This doctoral project, funded by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, develops subject-specific scaffolding strategies for use during the textbook phase on the basis of empirical findings from qualitative and quantitative surveys of school participants, which should make a significant contribution to continuous language education and differentiated subject teaching.

Philumeni De venenatis animalibus eorumque remediis et fragmenta

My project aims to offer a new critical edition with commentary of the iologic treatise transmitted under the name of the physician Philumenus (2nd/3rd century) and first and only published by Max Wellmann in 1908 with the title De venenatis animalibus eorumque remediis. The need for a new edition arises from the close study of the only manuscript transmitting the text of Philumenus: the codex Vaticanus graecus 284 (10th/11th century). This is in fact a late antique pharmacological compilation based on multiple sources. Therefore, what has hitherto been considered Philumenus is a synthesis between Philumenus and Ps.-Dioscorides' Theriaca. My new editorial criteria will thus be based on this new stemmatic relationship.

Senecas Dramenfiguren: fiktive Personen, Artefakte und Agency

Die moderne Figurentheorie versteht Figuren als Artefakte oder aber als fiktive Personen. Beide theoretischen Konzeptionen sind zentral für mein Dissertationsprojekt, das die Figuren der senecanischen Tragödien in den Blick nimmt und nach deren Agency fragt. Ich gehe erstens davon aus, dass eine Figur Senecas als Artefakt oder als Person wahrgenommen werden kann, der Dramentext jedoch die eine oder die andere Perspektive näherlegen kann. Zunächst frage ich, durch welche textuellen Strategien eine Figur als Artefakt oder Person erscheint. Zweitens gehe ich davon aus, dass die Sichtweisen auf die Figur als Artefakt oder Person die Interpretation der Figuren beeinflussen.Insbesondere die Agency einer senecanischen Dramenfigur wird in der Forschung unterschiedlich bewertet. Ziel des Dissertationsvorhabens ist es, die Frage nach der Agency für folgende Fragefelder zu beantworten: das Verhältnis zwischen (1) Person und Artefakt und weiterführend zwischen (2) Figur und Gattungskonventionen, sowie (3) Figur und literarischen Vorgängern. So sollen Erkenntnisse über die Figur im römischen Drama gewonnen werden und vermittelnde Perspektiven zwischen zwei Forschungszweigen (metadramatische und philosophische Interpretation) bereitgestellt werden.

Senecas systematisch und vollständig zu analysieren: eine solche Untersuchung soll zeigen, wie astronomische Passagen in einem traditionell auf die Diskussion von ethischen Fragen fokussierten Genre eingebettet und mit der Kompetenz des Naturphilosophen behandelt werden.

Pity and Suffering in Ovid’s Heroides: Epistolographic ‘Fanfiction’ as an Emotionally Charged Small Form

The project is dedicated to the Heroides, a literary collection of letters by the ancient poet Ovid, on the level of literary studies and emotion research, dealing with representations of suffering and pity and examining their effects on characters and readers/listeners. In this context, a relationship between the ancient small forms of ‘letter’ and ‘love elegy’ as well as the modern genre of ‘fan fiction’ and the emotionality of the Heroides will be established.

Der Diskurs über Bürgerkrieg und Krisenerfahrung in den Reden Ciceros (Arbeitstitel)

Ich untersuche die Reden Ciceros in Bezug auf ihren Umgang mit den gesellschaftlichen Krisen und Konflikten im Rom des 1. Jh. v. Chr. Insbesondere werde ich diachron die literarischen und rhetorischen Mittel identifizieren, mit denen Bürgerkriegs- und Gewalterfahrungen thematisiert werden, ob und wie gesellschaftliche Verbrechen und Schuldgefühle aufgearbeitet und Gedenk- bzw. Gedächtnisstrategien entwickelt werden. Kern der Argumentation ist, dass Reden (im Gegensatz bspw. zu Historiographie und Epos) in eine bestimmte räumliche, personelle und situative Gegenwart eingebunden und somit als diskursive und interaktive Kommunikation analysierbar sind. Um dies zu untersuchen, werde ich Textpassagen betrachten, die von stark negativ emotionalisierenden Narrativen und Figuren und deren intertextuellen und historischen Assoziationen geprägt sind oder möglicherweise auf Emotionen und traumatische Erinnerungen des Publikums anspielen. Zentral für die Untersuchung ist der Begriff „Forensischer Horror“, unter dem ich das affektive Angebot des Redners ans Publikum verstehe, im Kontext von räumlicher und institutioneller Umwelt (Forum Romanum, Gerichtsprozess/politische Versammlung) negative Gefühle wie Angst, Schuld und Trauer im Wortlaut der Rede zu erleben und in Beziehung zur Erfahrung des Bürgerkriegs zu setzen. Ziel der Untersuchung ist, eine Übersicht zu Entwicklungen und Brüchen im Sprechen über gesellschaftliche Konflikte im Rom des 1. Jh. v. Chr. an Ciceros Reden zu erstellen, dem umfassendsten und komplexesten Textkorpus aus dieser Zeit. Dadurch hoffe ich, eine neue Perspektive auf römische rhetorische Texte zu entwickeln, die jene als Ort der Austragung gesellschaftlicher Diskurse über kollektive Erinnerung und Identität, Konflikt und Aufarbeitung über das persuasive Redeziel hinaus beleuchten kann.

The biographies of Hippocrates in the Greek, Latin and Arabic tradition

The aim of my dissertation project is to provide a comprehensive literary study of the extant biographies of the ancient physician Hippocrates of Cos in the Greek and Arabic tradition. In doing so, I will not only examine the reception and characterisation of the persona of Hippocrates but also the broader context in which the biographies were transmitted. For the Greek tradition, this applies to the so-called Literatenviten which – despite their popularity in late antique and Byzantine times – have not yet been sufficiently studied, for the Arabic tradition to major gnomological and biobibliographical writings such as the Ṣiwān al-ḥikma cycle of texts, al-Mubaššir ibn Fātik’s Muḫtār al-ḥikam or Ibn Abī Uṣaibi‘a’s ‘Uyūn al-anbā’. In addition, I will also study the interrelations of the Arabic lives of Hippocrates among each other and towards their Greek sources, by asking, i.a., which source texts the Arab biographers used and how they changed or adapted these sources for their own purposes.

Towards the earliest history of pneuma

In my project I intend to explore the early history of an important ancient psycho-physiological tradition that served as a framework for the emergence of such hugely influential concepts in Greek philosophy, medicine, and natural science as pneuma, innate heat, locus of cognition and others. This tradition has had a tremendous intellectual impact not just on ancient but, arguably, on Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern thought; and spread its influence far beyond the West to Byzantium and the Syriac and Arabic Middle East.
I am particularly interested in the role the so-called ‘ Presocratics’ - especially, Heraclitus, Diogenes of Apollonia, Empedocles, Democritus, as well as other fifth-century thinkers – played in the formation and development of psycho-physiological doctrines of Greek physicians.
If Hellenistic and Imperial psychophysiology has received much scholarly attention, the same cannot be said about its earlier and earliest precursors. Overall, the current accounts of its beginnings and first steps are at best patchy and do not present a coherent picture. This lack of reliable historical foundation, in turn, skews the research on later and better-documented authors and doctrines – even such extensively studied ones as Aristotle, or the Hellenistic physiologists, like Diocles, Erasistratus or Herophilus; not to mention the so-called Pneumatic doctors of the Imperial period.
The aim of my project is, thus, firstly, to fill this gap and to explore how such concepts as pneuma (with all its varieties), innate heat, seat of the mind, etc. were first formed; how they interacted with each other; and how they initially functioned in various, sometimes very dissimilar, doctrinal contexts.

Das Verwischen der Grenze? Der Diskurs über die menschliche Göttlichkeit im neronischen und flavischen Epos

Meine Aufgabe besteht darin, eine umfangreiche Studie zum Thema des Verwischens der Grenze zwischen Menschen und Göttern in römischen nachaugusteischen Epen, vor allem in Lukans "Bellum Civile", Statius' "Thebais" und Silius Italicus' "Punica", zu bieten. Im Fokus stehen menschliche Figuren aus diesen Epen, die diese Grenze verletzen, überschreiten oder relativieren, u.a. Caesar, Hannibal, Kapaneus, Scipio, Theseus.
Der zentrale Punkt dieser Studie ist die Dichotomie zwischen einerseits dem Streben zur Göttlichkeit durch Theomachie und andererseits dem Weg, der durch Tugend und Verteidigung der Weltordnung liegt.
Zu den dabei zu beantwornden Fragen gehören u.a.: die Unterschiede bei der Behandlung des Themas im mythologischen und im historischen Epos, das Verhältnis zum Kaiserkult, das Verhältnis zu ähnlichen Motiven in der früheren Literatur.

Galeni in Hippocratis aphorismorum librum III commentarium - eine kritische Edition und Übersetzung

Most of the seven books of Galen's commentary on the Aphorisms of Hippocrates are still available in an edition of the 19th century only: K. G. Kühn (Hrsg.), Claudii Galeni opera omnia (1821-1833). As neither the selection of manuscripts available to this physician and historian of medicine nor his translation into Latin meet most of the readers expectation nowadays, this doctoral project will analyse the manyfold tradition of manuscripts of the third book towards a critical edition and give a translation into German. It adds to the works by Dr. Giulia Ecca, Dr. Christina Savino and Maria Börno who finished or are in the process of editing books V, VI and VII.
