Continuing education for teachers

Systematic in-service training is not only one of the great desiderata of teacher training geared towards lifelong learning, but also one of the areas of academic knowledge transfer in which the university has not yet fully utilised its potential. It is very regrettable that the majority of graduates of teacher training programmes do not experience their own university as a place that offers them a wide range of content-related impulses for their further professional development even after they have completed their studies. This must not only be in the interest of schools in order to ensure high-quality teaching. It must also be in the universities' interest that teachers, despite their distance from the university, provide teaching that can fundamentally fulfil current academic standards and in this way demonstrate the social significance of university research. This applies not only to the field of educational science and subject pegagogy, but especially to the academic foundation of teaching. Teachers are most likely to keep up to date in the field of subject pegagogy and methodology through further training programmes offered by textbook publishers, educational administrations or professional associations. But who is able to keep up to date with the latest developments in scientific research?

This deficiency does not only affect the scientific and mathematical subjects, in which scientific knowledge is gained in ever faster cycles. It also applies to ancient studies research. Here, too, it is very common for new research findings to take many years to find their way into the classroom.

Against this background, all members of our team are very active in the area of teacher training. In addition to numerous invitations to events in and outside of Berlin, we also rely on our institute as an attractive and central location for further training. We regularly organise events at our institute in close cooperation with the regional training department of the Senate School Administration, the German Association of Classical Philologists and textbook publishers.

In 2021, we also organised the "Friedrich-Gedike-Seminar. Akademie für Lehrkräftefortbildung" with the aim of ensuring a continuous transfer of knowledge between university research and school practice. As a unique institution in Germany, the Friedrich Gedike Seminar offers an academic supplement to the wide range of pedagogical and didactic training opportunities for teachers of Latin and Greek. Through the targeted teaching of academic content, an important contribution is made to quality assurance and professionalisation in ancient language teaching. In online lectures and workshops, teachers gain an insight into current issues and findings on teaching-relevant topics from all disciplines of ancient studies. Our interrelated series of events offer the opportunity to keep up to date with the latest academic developments even after graduating from university and to fulfil the obligation of continuing professional development.
