Consulting on teaching development at schools specialising in classical languages
One of the areas of activity of the classics pedagogy department is increasingly advising schools and the school administrations of the Federal States of Germany. The initial focus here is on questions of curriculum and teaching development in relation to the teaching of Latin and Greek. In addition to advising and supporting the development of framework curricula, this involves, for example, the question of what role Latin lessons can play in a school's language education concept and how they can be implemented and realised in practice.
We also work with schools that wish to further develop their classical language focus as part of an interdisciplinary educational concept. This is based on research activities on the question of how the humanistic tradition of general human education can be transformed into a modern concept of individual education.
In this context, in cooperation with the Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family and eleven Berlin secondary schools that offer a so-called classical language programme, we have adopted an impulse paper on the basis of which the schools want to systematically advance their development and set their own priorities. In this way, schools with a classical language specialisation should once again be perceived as places of pedagogical and didactic innovation.
We are currently advising a network of four grammar schools in North Rhine-Westphalia (Ratsgymnasium Minden, Ratsgymnasium Bielefeld, Leopoldinum Detmold, Theodorianum Paderborn), which have joined forces to develop concepts for individual support for pupils in the 5th grade, with Latin lessons playing an important role as a bridging language.
In addition, we support subject teams in providing information to parents and pupils, e.g. at parents' evenings, school festivals or events with pupils.
