Curriculum Vitae

Irene Calà (* 1979), born in Italy, graduated in Classics at the University of Palermo in 2008, specializing in Greek Paleography and Byzantine Philology. She concluded her PhD in “Bisanzio ed Eurasia” in 2012 at Bologna University with a dissertation entitled “Per l’edizione del primo dei Libri medicinales di Aezio Amideno”.

She is an Associate member of Laboratoire Médecine grecque”, UMR 8167 “Orient et Méditerranée”- Université Paris IV and Member of the Research Group “Interpreters of Medicine”, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha.

In October 2012 she began a collaboration with the Project “Episteme in Bewegung” of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, under the direction of Philip van der Eijk.

From January 2015 to October 2016 she was Research Associate at CNRS (Paris) in the project ERC ‘Floriental’ under the direction of Dr. Robert Hawley.

From December 2016 until June 2018 she was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin/Max Planck Institut with the project ‘Bleeding for Health. Galen's Views on Phlebotomy and Their Reception in Medical Works of Late Antiquity’, under the direction of Philip van der Eijk. She is still associated with the Project “Episteme in Bewegung” of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, under the direction of Philip van der Eijk as Visiting Researcher.

Since July 2018 she has been a Research Associate at LMU Munich, Institut für Ethik, Geschichte und Theorie der Medizin, DFG project ‘Griechische Erstedition der Libri medicinales, Bücher 10 und 14, des Aëtios von Amida (6. Jh. n. Chr.) samt deutscher Übersetzung, medizinhistorisch-philologischem Kommentar und Quellenanalyse’
