Born 18th of August, 1973 in Seppenrade (North Rhine-Westfalia), married to Dr. Marialucrezia Leone, one son. He studied Classics and Philosophy in Münster, Dublin and Leuven (with M. Baltes, J.M. Dillon and C. Steel).

In October 2008, Helmig was appointed Assistant Professor of Classics (Late Antiquity) at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In September 2009 he became Co-Director of the Graduate School of Ancient Philosophy (together with Jonathan Beere). Since January 2011, he is Director of the Ancient Philosophy and Science Network (APSN), an international PhD-network of the Universities HU Berlin, Chicago, Leuven, Princeton, and Toronto at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
