within the programme 'Medicine of the Mind, Philosophy of the Body - Discourses of Health and Well-Being in the Ancient World', funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and directed by Professor Philip van der Eijk, Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Classics and History of Science at the Humboldt University Berlin.


1 Position as ’Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in'

Area of responsibility: Contributions to research and research supervision, including participation in seminars, workshops, conferences and public engagement activities, within the programme 'Medicine of the Mind, Philosophy of the Body - Discourses of Health and Well-Being in the Ancient World'.

Requirements: A completed Masters Programme (or equivalent) and a PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, History of Medicine and Science) and demonstrable research interests and publications in the area of the research programme as well as a good command of Greek and Latin.

Candidates will not be required to be able to speak German, but will be expected to learn German while in Berlin. Ongoing presence in Berlin is expected as there will be an active scholarly exchange.

Formal applications including a list of publications and a statement of proposed research (up to 500 words) should be sent indicating the code to Professor Philip van der Eijk (klassphil@hu-berlin.de), by 31 October 2011. Candidates are further asked in their application to name three referees and to ensure that their referees write directly to the address above by 31 October 2011. 2 Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

  • fixed term for 3 years, starting not later than 01/01/2012

Area of responsibility: Contributions to research, including participation in seminars, workshops, conferences and public engagement activities, within the programme 'Medicine of the Mind, Philosophy of the Body - Discourses of Health and Well-Being in the Ancient World'.

Requirements: For the PhD stipends, a completed Masters Programme (or equivalent) with distinction in a relevant subject (Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, History of Medicine and Science) is required. For the postdoctoral research fellowships, a PhD in a relevant subject and demonstrable research interests and publications in the area of the research programme are essential requirements. A good command of Greek and Latin (or a willingness to acquire this during the programme) is desirable. Candidates will not be required to be able to speak German, but will be expected to learn German while in Berlin. Ongoing presence in Berlin is expected as there will be an active scholarly exchange.

The stipends for postdoctoral fellowships and PhD positions will be at the usual levels set by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
