– Aphorism of the Month –

The gastric cavity is naturally hottest, and sleep longest, in winter and spring. In these seasons, then, more food should be given. For indeed there is more innate heat, and therefore a greater need of nourishment.  A sign of this is provided by different times of life and by athletes.

Welcome to the first issue of our project newsletter "Galen's Commentary on the Hippocratic Aphorisms" in 2026!

As our first newsletter of the year 2026, we present a concise update on recent developments and upcoming activities in our research project.

We have created a new section on the goha.bbaw website, where we will publish from time to time some of our latest findings on Galen's Commentary on the Aphorisms over the next few years. These articles will cover topics such as manuscript discoveries, stemmatological problems, editorial methodology, Galen's activities as a commentator, etc. While these articles are intended to be citable, they are generally works in progress. Markus Asper and Raphaela Veit will open the series with their articles "Commentary and performance narrative: Some stance acts in Galen" and "Eine neue Handschrift für Galens Kommentar zu den Hippokratischen Aphorismen im Arabischen: Ms. Mašhad, Kitābḫāna-yi markazī-yi Āstān-i Quds-i Raḍawī, 26293".

Furthermore, we introduce a new feature: our Aphorism of the Month is now accompanied by a brief commentary, prepared by Gregor Vetterlein for the months January / February and Raphaela Veit for March. Take a look at our Aphorism Archive to browse the full collection!

With warm regards,
The entire project team
