DFG award for long-term project "Galen's Commentary on the Hippocratic Aphorisms" (van der Eijk, Asper, Overwien)
Galen of Pergamon (129-216 AD) wrote an extensive commentary on the "Aphorisms" of Hippocrates. The DFG has now approved funding for an interdisciplinary long-term project with a total of five research positions will focus on the first four books of this commentary. The core of the project is a bilingual edition, in which the Arabic translation (made in the 9th century) will be critically edited alongside the Greek text, taking into account all known textual witnesses. Both versions will also be translated into a modern language. On the basis of the edition, further extensive research will be carried out into Galen's practice as a commentator and his position within the commentary literature. The four commentary books will also be edited in digital form in order to evaluate the text and its various versions from a linguistic point of view. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften.
