DFG approves long-term project "Galen's Commentary on the Hippocratic Aphorisms" (van der Eijk, Asper, Overwien)

Galen of Pergamon (129-216 AD) wrote an extensive commentary on the "Aphorisms" of Hippocrates. The DFG has now approved of an interdisciplinary long-term project with a total of five research positions, which will focus on the first four books of this commentary. The core of the project is a bilingual edition, in which the Arabic translation (made in the 9th century) will be critically edited alongside the Greek text, taking into account all known text witnesses. Both versions will also be translated into a modern language. On the basis of the edition, further extensive research will be carried out on the commentator Galen in order to shed light on his position within the commentary literature. The four commentary books will also be edited in digital form in order to be able to evaluate the text and its various versions from a linguistic point of view.
